SSOPO was started in 1999 as an initiative of Help Age International (HAI). It worked first for 5 years as part of HAI till it got independent from HAI in 2004.
SSOPO’s head office is based in Juba, Central Equatoria State from where it currently coordinates its outreach activities to Eastern and Western Equatoria States. Attempts are currently being made to establish smaller regional offices in Wau and Malakal to extend the programmes to the rest of the states in South Sudan. SSOPO pays special attention to challenges facing the situation and the development of older people in South Sudan. As such it is very much aware and concerned about these problems and how to address them while using and investing in the potentials of older people. SSOPO works on the basis of a gender and age equity approach that creates space for interaction between women, men and the various age groups regardless of their culture, ethnicity or religion thus enabling it as a platform to deal with issues of peace, justice, human rights, poverty alleviation and creating a harmonious society in which people are equal and where there is no domination.
SSOPO seeks to achieve its mission through dissemination of knowledge and building capacities of the older people in the fields of poverty alleviation, social justice, human rights, health services, HIV/AIDS and participation in decision making at local, community and national levels. SSOPO has established an office, a vocational training centre for food processing, basic and advance skills in Tailoring for youth and women in older people headed households and it provides training activities on professional cooking, food and beverage service, pastry and bakery and entrepreneurship, these are subjects covered under food processing and Tailoring covered basic and advance dressmaking and entrepreneurship . It has a collection of materials that cover the field of the work of the organization. The organization has done field research for the preparation of developmental programs and emergency activities.
A society that is concerned with and caters for the needs of older persons and in which older persons are parts of the decision making processes that will shape the country.
In South Sudan in the areas that SSOPO works in; older persons and the communities they live in, live no longer in extreme poverty, are no victim of social injustices, their human rights are acknowledged, they have access to health services, and participate in decision making processes. While developing the capacity of older people to acquire skills for self-reliance, SSOPO also attempts to increase the ability of older people to realize their roles in their community and in the Government.
Our values are “simplicity and humane for success”.
• There is a national policy on rights of older people. The rights of older people are secured in the new constitution. Older people are respected and there are laws to protect the rights of older people ;
• The economic situation of older people and their households is such these people, in the communities in which SSOPO works, are able to take care of their daily needs (shelter, food, clothing, acces to health care).
• SSOPO it is a viable organization which is innovative and responsive to the needs of their beneficiaries via its programmes/projects designs.
• SSOPO has functional strategic leadership and governance; professional human resource development; administrative and programmematic PME systems (Planning Monitoring and Evaluation), fund raising & financial management strategies;
The problem Statement:
On 15th December, 2013 at about 9:15 p.m. shooting started in the Presidential Guards compound and spread to the areas which according to the Government was a coup attempt by the former vice President Dr. Riak Machar. The fighting continued the whole night of Sunday up to the present moment. During the course of the fighting, the element of ethnic (Dinka versus Nuer) killing cropped in. This led to massive fled of persons to UNMISS compounds for safety and protection in Juba, Bor and Bentiu leaving behind food and property. The UNMISS cannot meet their basic needs as they never anticipated the incident would result to massive displacement of Civilians to their compounds. As such the persons in the compound are experiencing untold suffering and hardship as they cannot come out of the UNMISS compound to go and search for food for fear of being killed.
Current displacement figures: 15,000 UNMISS Bor base; 17,000 UNMISS Bentiu base; and 34,000 upwards in UNMISS bases in Juba. In addition to this there are reports of over 31,000 people displaced in Awerial County; however these latter numbers have not been verified. OCHA considers the displacement figures to be a gross underestimation of the reality.
In the HCT meeting it was disclosed that World Food Programme promised to provide 10 metric tons of food rations, UNICEF promised to provide high energy biscuits and OXFAM GB promised to provide some sanitation facilities. However, there are no NGOs to coordinate the distribution work and National NGOs are asked to take up the responsibility. Most of INGOs have closed their offices for Christmas holidays and/or fearing the deterioration of the security situation in South Sudan.
The priority needs to the displaced people at the UN compounds are as follows:
- Sanitation materials
- Sleeping mats and
SSOPO intend to target 1,500 older people, children 3,000 and women 2,000 in the displace camps in Juba and Bor towns in Jongolei State where the town had changed hands between the Government and the rebels and the impact of the war on the population is very serious.
Therefore, SSOPO is appealing for support from well-wishers to enable the organization to intervene in these emergency situations which nobody knows how long it will take and if there is relocation, where? Support us to support the most vulnerable people in need of emergency assistance South Sudan.
